Another Death Due to Medical Neglect at Piedmont Regional Jail
For the second time in less than a year, organizers with The People United have been contacted by friends and family members of a deceased inmate at Piedmont Regional Jail for help in exposing the medical neglect that led to the death. Michael Baker lived the last two weeks of his life in agony at Piedmont, consistently being refused the medical attention that may have saved his life.
Last November, we were contacted by immigrant detainees being held in Piedmont for assistance with exposing the medical neglect that led to the death of Guido Newbrough. Our media campaign resulted in a groundbreaking story in the New York Times that exposed the conditions in the jail. In the ensuing investigation, all immigrant detainees were removed from the facilities and 50 guards were laid off.
Now we see that the deadly conditions persist. Join us in supporting the friends and family of Michael Baker as they hold a vigil and call to accountability at the next Farmville Town Council Meeting.
At the request of some family members, the vigil scheduled for 10/14 has been canceled. We continue in discussions and will publish the next steps as they arise.
