No Justice - No Peace was the resounding chant of nearly 700 people who marched on the Powhatan courthouse Sunday. The community gathered in outrage at the decision by a nearly all-white jury to reduce the charges against the boy who shot Tahliek Taliaferro from behind with a semi-automatic assault rifle to involuntary manslaughter. Tahliek's family and the Powhatan chapter of the NAACP organized the protest.
While the vast majority of the attendees were members of the local community, member organizations in the Virgina People's Assembly showed up in support, including The Defenders who helped in the coordination of security for the march.
Next protest in Powhatan 4/14 as another of the defendants is sentenced. Details will be posted here as they are available.
